The Lightspann Story Is A 35-Year Love Affair With Glass.
Founder Christina Spann discovered the glass arts in the late 1970’s, shortly after graduating from Arizona State University and UC Santa Barbara with fine arts degrees in drawing, painting and printmaking. Fascinated by the unique properties of glass in the presence of both heat and light, Christina designed and sold glass materials for 12 years prior to founding Lightspann in Oakland, California in 1991. She immediately set to work developing groundbreaking lighting designs that transformed all types of glass into functional works of art. “As a female artist, I found a kindred spirit in glass,” says Christina. “It’s remarkably versatile, full of personality, and often challenging to work with.”
Under Christina’s leadership, Lightspann quickly earned a reputation for solving large-scale design challenges with award-winning custom lighting solutions that showcased the company’s extensive glass expertise and unrelenting attention to detail. Additional capabilities developed in metalwork, textiles and woods inspired further design innovation. Many of Lightspann’s most popular designs feature signature combinations of artisan-crafted materials that are unique within the lighting industry.
Lightspann fixtures have been featured frequently in national design publications and television shows. They illuminate the interiors of leading restaurants, hotels, casinos, performing art centers, sports arenas, corporate offices, country clubs, and some of the most beautiful homes in North America. In 2011, Christina sold Lightspann to Hammerton, enabling her to focus her talents exclusively on product design. Today, she heads the company’s field office in the San Francisco Bay Area, while all manufacturing and operations are based in Salt Lake City, UT.
